Wing Construction
Page 4
When I was finished putting
on the leading edge plywood I noticed in some areas there was
a slight wave in the plywood on the top side between the ribs
in just a few places. I talked to Mike Makepeace about this. He
told me that this does happen from time to time and suggested
that I scallop the top front leading edge. If I didn't have this
problem now, I could have had this wave in the plywood anyway
when the fabric is shrunk. Putting a scallop in the leading edge
would eliminate this from happening and I would have a nicer finished
look to the wing.
Another item you will install
on the wing I will call the fabric bracing. It is 1/8" X1"
strips of plywood. They go on the ends of the wings, aleron and
flaps. These give you a nicer finish but there main pourpos is
to keep your wing from warping when your shrinking your fabric.
Something that took me a
long time to do was to fit the aileron. My wood file and quite
a bit of sandpaper got a lot of use during this process. It just
takes some time to have it all fit right.
This is a route end view
of the aleron attached to the wing. At the bottom of the photo
youi can see where the fabric bracing has been installed on the
aileron and not on the flap. On the flap side it is a solid wing.
I did not build the flaps for this 303. You can also see the aleron
control arm. The control for the aileron are tubes and not cables.
